PERFORMANCE
WHAT KAFKA FORBODE - Bronwyn Lace
SECESSION, VIENNA, 12 JULY 2022
In a 1915 letter to his publisher, Franz Kafka stipulated that the nature of the creature depicted in The Metamorphosis remain vague and not drawn as vermin. In the late 1920’s, Eugen Fischer, a German professor of medicine, anthropology, and eugenics and rector of the University of Berlin succeeded in making mixed marriage illegal in German colonies and effectively excluding mixed race human beings from the family of man, at around this same time Hendrik Verwoed, the so-called architect of Apartheid in South Africa won a scholarship to pursue his studies at the University of Berlin.
In this 30 minute performance for the Secession Bronwyn Lace delivered a report of sorts, meditating on the transitions and translations evident with Die Verwandlung and The Metamorphosis. The performance is in part written, in part recorded and in part not drawn.
